Week 4 (in class)
This is the first time I have been to this section of the student center and automatically my focus was on the shading on the ground. The pattern of the shade reminds me of some kind of abstract art piece. I also love how the dimmed sun light mixes with the strip of bright sun light, because it reminds of when I was a child imagining that the floor was made of lava, and there would be safe zones and danger zones. For me the dimmed light is the safe zone and the bright light is the danger zone. I like how the light extends, it's like walking on an abstract road.

Week 4 (In class picture)
Hello Everyone,
I took this picture at about 10:30, yesterday morning. As you may recall, the sun was beaming brightly in the sky, washing everything around in white light. I came across these vending machines that were producing their own light, florescent I assume, and I noticed that even being under a large building did not spare them from the enormousness amount of natural light that was being emitted that day. As we can see, the machine's glass is showing the reflection of the King Hall courtyard. The yellow table umbrellas can be seen. I found this to interesting, and It gave me a new perspective on lighting, especially our sun. I was amerced in the same feeling I might have if I am in an ocean. Only this is an ocean of sunlight. This picture illustrates that nothing escaped the ocean of sun this day.

Week 4 Cylinders
Week 4 Cylinders
I really like the way the light hits the cylinder pillars by the Luckman. The pillars almost look like they are being hit by a backlight, angled just alittle to the left in order to cast the shadow in the front. The shadow pattern that the sun creates around the Luckman is like a pin-strip gobo. Whats interesting is that the shadow on the cylinders is twisting around.

one dangerous shadow
This one can't make a light. I might look fashion less when I look in my mirror because I have less light.
Week 4 DTLA
This seemed like an interesting picture to Me. It's a picture of downtown Los Angeles being backlit by the sunset behind it. I thought this would be an interesting gobo showing the building skyline. The soft pink being emitted by the sun is a pretty color as well. The feelings I get from this picture are rewarding and calming. The way the light bleeds from one color to the next is interesting as well. I think it would be complicated getting a smooth run of those two colors next to each other like that but if I had to try I would use two fresnels to reach the wide array needed to hit both areas hazily. The Secret Lives of Vending Machines
Bearing in mind what we've been learning in this class so far, I found myself standing by King Hall, staring at the vending machines wondering how everything in the machine itself is lit. Well, as it turns out, there's two fluorescent bar lights on each side of the glass, angled to face the snacks. It's one of those things you don't ever really think about until you decide (for whatever reason) to think about it. Snacks! They want attention and good lighting too, who knew?!
Mountains
I've never had a chance to go to the mountains, which is why I decided to take a picture of the ones next to our campus. That's the closest I can get. What grabbed my attention was the way they look in the morning. They have this this icy color that outlines them making them really sharp. But the time of day makes a difference as we see the in the bottom the sun is making the mountain look more faded than the top.

Court Yard Lighting
This photo is of interesting shadows casted onto the concrete from some railing outside the music building. I particularly liked this shadow because of the way it was morphed and shaped. It's amazing how everyday objects can create unique shapes just using light, shapes that can be morphed to look like something else.
This would be fun to experiment with in a theatrical setting, and I can imagine be transformed into some unique ways of story telling.
Week #4: Block 9 on the Camino Real
This is my buddy Steven, in character as Gutman during Camino Real. There's a couple of facets of the lighting in this picture that I think are really interesting: the sparkling star shape of the lantern visible at the top of the picture, and the different colors on the two halves of Steven's body. The latter is especially of interest to me because it directly parallels the effect of two of the light choices available to us in class for our projects: the two side lights. If one were to look at Steve in this lighting without knowing anything else about this picture, they might assume he's a shady, slightly ominous character, which would be a fitting description of Gutman.

Week #4

Hello Everyone,
This weekend, after a wonderful dinner in Old Town Pasadena, I was exploring the area and stumbled upon this beautifully constructed building. I basically had free reign to wander around, and was able to take this shot from one of the towers. As you can see, the bottom levels of the building are well lit by bright incandescent lighting. They create a sort of yellowish hue. What I find to be magnificently beautiful is the way the light starts to spill into the deep navy colored sky. On the top left of the building, we can see about three different shades of blue layered on each other. Also, the contrast of the light against the dark, all within this masterfully crafted building, proves to we a spectacular spectacle. Thank you for reading, everyone.

week 4 sunset and little beforehand
I took these pictures at different times on my way home from school everyday. I decided to take these pictures because at the moment the downlight really spoke to me and I liked the color coming off of the sun. ITs interesting to see the two differences from the more midday shot to the closer to sundown type of shot. The the sundown type of shot is a really pretty amber and I find myself attracted to that color and I would want to reenact that color if given a chance to create a sunset on stage. MY phone doesn't really give this picture justice but I hope it portrays the color difference and the warmth coming from the light. Its interesting to see how the downlight still keeps some of the things in the wings lightly lit mostly in shadow and the sunset lights more though if i would have caught it about an hour later i would have caught it from the mountains showing interesting backlight. Lighting the sunset I would probably use a leko just so i could get the nice smooth edges of the sun against the background.I would probably use a Leko for the other picture as well just so that i didn't hit a wide array of surfaces with my light as I came down with my light.
Feeling Blue is a Hue Too "Boo!"
My subject for this image was the side wall filled by an ocean of reels of film, possibly celluloid ones, contrasted by the white screen. I was able only to take one picture due to my puzzlement of the blue spot on the bottom of my phone. I hadn’t used a flash since I wanted to capture the natural lighting inside of Echo Park’s Film Center after an inspiring screening of Gillo Pontecorvo’s film The Battle of Algiers. The blue spot had really baffled me as I stared intently at my phone. This lady from KPFK asked me if I was okay. I showed her my phone telling her I wanted to capture the filmstock but instead got this creepy blue hue on the bottom dominating the picture. Not wanting to be rude and continue to capture “the right shot” as this lady genuinely wanted to converse, I was left with this image. I wanted to capture the different colored filmstock and just general vibe from the environment. It felt more of a record store to me, an odd interpretation seeing as how there were so many amazing vintage cameras along the opposing wall and just general movie stuff like cinematic seats. The front part of the ceiling was lit by an upward facing lamp whose bulb I can only speculate was using an edison light connector as well as the other lights behind a makeshift wall separating the back office from the screening room. The light was very warm and dim, naturally since one’s eyes must adjust after being in the dark for over an hour, not bright and cold like a doctor’s office higher along on the Kelvin Scale(Yes, I just had to:)
Week 4 - Blog 3 - The Light in Life.
Light has a funny way of making complete sense yet can create such magical images. The leaves I saw this beautiful afternoon were all being hit by the suns rays but regardless of the time of day some leaves were casted in shadow while others glowed and reflected vibrant greens. Each branch casted a shadow along the tree trunk and the other leaves. Seeing this gives the tree depth and a sense of realism but at the same time allows for the tree to illuminate and shine in a way that seems almost unreal to be true, but thats life, an abundant amount of light. So whether one is casted in shadow at one moment in their life, eventually the light will finds it way to illuminate the beauty in every aspect something or someone has to offer.

Week #4
Today, I looked outside my kitchen window and saw the sky really pretty. It grabbed my attention because it looked like if it was a fresh new sky. It always shocks me how one day it can be sunny and the next all cold and foggy. This crazy weather in L.A. is unpredictable. So, I went outside to take a picture of it and even though it looks kinda grayish in the picture, the sky was this pale blue color with some white spots around it. What I found interesting was the shape of the clouds and the colors that you see coming out from the sun. I kinda saw the rainbow colors but in like a pastel color scheme. What I ask myself is how would it look on stage if we had light colors coming out of a bright color.

Week #4: Feeling miserable towards ticket money
Week #4: Feeling miserable towards ticket money
-This photo is my friend and me's first-time Lakers game watching in Staples Center. First ridiculous thing is right now is cheerleaders time, and I forgot to take a picture when players playing basketball. Another ridiculous thing is important area of this photo is actually big billboard that shows all score, media, advertisement, too. We didn't buy very expensive tickets, so we couldn't easily see vivid shots and famous players like Coby Braynt's bare face. Our eyes subconsciously glanced to the billboard for most of the time. Therefore, I couldn't receive more than $100 amount of benefits and felt miserable towards those ticket moneys when we were coming back.

Full Moon -Week #4
Full Moon
I took this picture a couple of weeks ago on campus after getting out of class. It was a full moon and extra bright. This picture made me think about the different kind of "moon light" and how that can be translated in a theatrical setting. When a full moon first begins to rise it is right above the horizon and looks HUGE (an optical allusion). It's often more dim, orangey yellow color. However when the moon is directly above it can be a intense white light, like how it was in this photo. The moon alone this night was lighting through darkness, it was sharp and couldn't be ignored. This is so much different from the "romantic" purply blue moonlight we so often think of.
With the moon alone I can think of so many ways to experiment with light!
Kind of looks like a light post in this picture, but I guarantee that was the moon!

Week 3: Blog Entry #2 - The Heart of Love
Before I start I told myself to avoid using the sunset again (or sunrise) But this was just too good not to post!
Love I imagine is a lot of things. Anyone could argue that what they believe love is but for me love is warmth. It is an indescribable amount of warmth that radiates from your heart. Just like the sun, it shoots beams of warmth into everyone and everything. The sun in this case is creating a beautiful layer of light and color that is almost the heart of the sky. It is emitting slight pinks and oranges as it make everything around it a breathtaking sight. I would hope that when you find love every room you enter transforms because nothing will ever feel the same. Although, you can't own the sun or love, once you find that someone or something that creates an endless amount of energy in every fiber of your being, I would believe you found what it is they call Love.

Week # 2 -
Ever year as a kid, my parents would take me and my siblings to the fair that was only a five minute drive from where we lived; still till this day I never miss a year. What attracted me to this photo I captured some time back was the contrast between the darkness and light. The light illuminating from the carousel compliments the colors that are portrayed on the ride; the colors seem to be more vibrant. Having taken the photo at night, the dark sky gives the photo a sense of eeriness.
Week #2
Week 2,
Hello all,
After 24 hours of food poisoning, I left my apartment in Downtown LA, and found my eyes were sensitive to almost any form of light. This picture was taken in the stairwell, a few steps from the elevator. The first source of lighting I began to adjust to was the florescent bulbs. These lights sharpened my nausea. As I looked up, I found sun light coming in from the opening on the roof. Although the sunlight contains more intensity then the florescent lighting, the sunlight was more pleasing for my eyes to adjust to. As you can see in the picture, the florescent light appears to have a yellowish hue, while the light being emitted from the sun, at the top of the picture, appears to be white.
Love,
Luke

Week #2: My Shadow
-I took this my shadow photo during when I was painting red color to the fire extinguisher in Arena theatre(Pretty sure). This picture inspires me because it shows strict color differences in many places and I took only shadow picture because my actual body and clothes were half colored with paints. Therefore, I think this was a fine rest time going thing. Of course, this relates to the stages because I took the picture on top of the stage quietly without even any other person not knowing.

Week #2: Rock 'n Roll
Blog Entry #1- Week 2
The best part about my train rides home back to Oceanside is being able to see the beach. I always find myself coming home at a different time so each time I get a completely different view of the ocean. Its amazing that even though you can not see the source of light, in this case the sun, it's still evident it's creating the beautiful transition from day till night. As the night sets in and the day leaves there is moment where the two meet and fuse together creating enough light to form silhouettes and a beautiful color that merges the wonder of day and the mysteries of night.

Week 2: Traffic and Shadow
Week 2: Traffic and Shadow
If you are a lucky individual in Los Angeles you will always find yourself avoiding the dreaded tempo of it's traffic; for those of us that are not so lucky, there is the opportunity to examine the way the sun casts a top light/down light on the cars at 2 pm. I would also say, given the formation of the shadow, that there is a bit of side light angling as well. I spend so much of my time on the road that I figured that would be the best place to draw my source.
Week #2 Tree Shadow
Morning would be my favorite time of day. You get to admire nature and breath nice fresh air. The first picture is from a tree outside my house. I took it in the morning around 11am. I always look at it everyday and I noticed the pattern in the shade it made when the sun was behind it. which it's called back lighting. The second picture is a picture of a tree as well, at school. I took this picture around 10:20am on my way to class. This time the sun was lighting it from the side, so in this case we would use a side light and it would do the same effect. But I also realize we can use gobos to make that pattern the tree makes when the sun is lighting it either from the back or side.

Journal Entry #1: Exit Door
What
drew me to take this photo was the sculpting of the lighting. The mixture of
the light with the door and darkened bricks can produce many metaphorical
thoughts. For example, the thought I produced from looking at the photo was how
we create dark brick walls within our mind and never let anything in, but there
is a door we can open up at any time, it’s just up to us if we want to let
anything in. The photo creates a feeling of revelation. There is a bright
positive glow that reflects off of the metal that is attached to the door.

Lighting week 2 Bloody moon
This is a picture of the bloody moon from a couple weeks ago.A moon where the sun blocks out the moon for a couple hours.I stayed up from 2 to 6 watching this solar eclipse and this was the best picture i was able to take.I started to think what would be the best way to express this look on stage.Would it be with a wash over the stage with Franels expressing the ever growing moonlight from the the sun leaving its area or would it be better to use a Franel as moonlight and a sure four to be the distinctive lines representing the sun and its edges throughout its motions.Would you even be able to tell.Would i have to use different intensities to differentiate between the moon and the sun or maybe gels would be better for this. The moon was supposed to have a red tint to it that night but sadly it never came but it would have been interesting to see and decide what color swatches to use to represent a red moon.Especially depending on what type of amber or red too use as the moonlight. What type of world would that represent.A crazed place where demons had just risen from the ashes of hell or maybe somewhere where someone epic had just died under a red moon.I could see this image or setting being used for a plethora of instances.Another question or situation i could see myself having an issue with is making the moonlight a soft light but keeping the rst of the stage dark maybe barnyard doors on a franel though from there the audience would be able to ascertain the fact it was an eclipse.MAybe if the color got relatively darker every couple minutes. How would I light the actors what would be the best way without breaking the ambiance of there eclipse.
Stage Lighting- Backlit Window
The blinds in my room do a terrible job of keeping the light out. Every morning in my dark room light starts to bleed through my blinds. This morning I realized it was backlit, by the sun. I thought this was interesting and immediately thought of a stage and what that would look like. I moved the blinds in different positions experimenting with the amount of light I can let through, the shape of that light, how much of that light will illuminate the surrounding scenery, and how much can we see behind the blinds? Also standing directly in front of this window in a dark room would make you backlit as well. I found it pretty cool that I found a "concealing" light in my room and wondered what other kinds of light I could find...
